Devotional: Will They Ever Grow Up?

You are only young once, but you can stay immature indefinitely.
The Bible study group leader was looking out over the group  that was gathered that day, and realized nobody was listening! What had happened, how long had this been taking place, what was to become of these adults ? Will they ever grow up?

...Of whom we have much to say, and hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing. For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the first principles of the oracles of God; and you have come to need milk and not solid food.—Hebrews 5:11-12, HCSB
If you have ever had this realization as a Bible study leader you aren't alone. If we are passionate about leading people toward spiritual maturity we will experience times of frustration and disappointment. So, when the time comes . . .
  • Keep preparing to teach each week. One day some will grow up and even become teachers themselves.
  • Keep pouring you life into your group. Your investment of time and energy will produce fruit.
  • Keep passionately leading your group to focus on Christ and His mission.
  • Keep presenting the oracles of God, even if you have to back up and teach the "milk" from time to time.

Father, encourage and empower us to move forward with those you have entrusted to us. May we not become discouraged by those who don't ever seem to grow up.
